I know, I know, it's not Spring yet. Have you looked out the window? It's beautiful out there. Things are popping up, the birds are singing, the lawn mower is mowing. The lawn mower was brought out for the first time this year. It too, is happy. It started on the first try, that's how I know. I so much want to get out there with my clogs, my gloves, no--no gloves. I want to get my fingers dirty. I LOVE the smell of dirt. Oh, and the smell of tomato plants. I also love the smell of new shower curtains...hmm....
I know it's too early and that there will be more frosts to come, so please don't email me and preach your gardening how-to's. I know, but a girl can dream. I'm dreaming of all the bulbs Bry & I planted. I can't remember exactly, but I think we planted 100 daffodil bulbs and who knows how many other kinds. My favorite flower is the Daffodil. Who doesn't like the daffodil? The wonderful smell, the cheery yellowness? My only problem is cutting them to bring them indoors.
I'm also dreaming about the garden. What to do this year? Do I dare plant cauliflower again? It was delicious and big, but there were so many little buggers, kinda took a little bit of the enjoyment out of eating it.
I've already planted my peas. Too early, you think? My dad has always sworn that they need to be put in the ground on President's Day. I planted them Wednesday. As long as the peas don't know the date, I think I'm in the clear. I love peas. If I owned an acre of land, I'd have an acre of peas.
Tomatoes. Yum. I like cherry tomaters. This year I'm going to plant three plants. Two normally and I'm going to try one upside down. They sell a baggy thing on TV, but as most of you know, I'm way too cheap to buy that stuff, so I'm working on, "fashioning" something myself. I kid you not, I lay in bed scheming of frugal gardening ideas.
Every year is a learning experience for me. I certainly do not have a green thumb, but it's not black either. Last year, I don't know what I was thinking, but I desperately wanted my own herb garden. I also thought my indoor cat would enjoy some catnip. Why didn't I realize that the neighbor cats would too? It lasted about one day and I found cat poop all over my yummy herbs. Also, someone advised me to put beer out for the slugs. Never found a dead slug from the beer, but the beer was gone...drunk cats? I have gotten lots of advice on how to control the slugs. This year my traps will include 2 liter bottles, salt and tape...I'll let you know how it works. I know, you're on the edge of your seat. Hold on...
